Lift Off to Literacy (Reading Drive)

Lift Off to Literacy began as a reading pilot for our students in 2023 to generate confidence in and excitement for reading, to boost comprehension, and to celebrate the successes and milestones achieved throughout the reading drive.

Over the course of six weeks, students track their reading. Before, during and after school reading all counts to their totals, which are charted on special rockets that each class names and decorates. Additional literacy and space themed activities are incorporated into our labs such as practicing grammar and vocabulary with their ‘vocabulary catcher’ and class vocabulary wall, demonstrating writing skills in their character scrapbook, performing research on topics such as authors and illustrators, and discussing their findings during community time.

Families are encouraged to support additional reading efforts at home.  We encourage at least an extra 15 minutes of reading a day.

At the end of the six weeks, we have a closing ceremony to celebrate their success.

Our goal is to make literacy fun and demonstrate to students the many ways reading and writing show up in their daily lives. With the support of our families and school partners, we look forward to elevating our students and their love for learning.

CAMP EDGE

Our summer camp has a new name, which reflects our commitment to helping students grow their confidence and skills. Throughout our engaging activities, we highlight their Effort, Determination, Generosity, and Enthusiasm so they know they can always climb higher.
