The Summer Edge: 2025
6 Fun Ways To Keep Your Children Reading All Summer
Studies show that summer reading helps children maintain and grow their literacy skills and can prevent the ‘summer slide,” when students may lose some of their academic progress from the school year. Here’s how you can include reading in your children’s everyday activities.
1. Set Up a Summer Reading Challenge
Download our 25 Book Reading Challenge printable page and have your children color in each book they read as they go. Prizes or special outings for reaching certain milestones may provide a little extra motivation.
2. Go on a Special Outing
Plan an activity based on the book your child is reading. Bring the book with you and talk about how what you are doing relates to the story.
3. Launch a Family Book Club
Find a book you all can read together and have a “book club” night where everyone can talk about the book. Special themed activities and snacks inspired by the story will make it memorable.
4. Take Advantage of Your Local Library and Join Their Summer Program
Most public libraries run free summer reading programs with prizes and events. Set aside time for a weekly visit and ask the librarians if they have book suggestions to help your children explore new genres.
5. Help Your Children Create Their Own Books
Tap into your children’s natural creativity. With some paper and markers, they can write and illustrate their own short stories. Or use our Comic Strip template so they can make their own comics. Celebrate their creations with a special read-aloud.
6. Give Audiobooks a Try
Audiobooks are a great way to keep developing your children’s literacy. Many libraries offer Libby, a free digital app that has a wide selection of audio books for children.
