15 Fun Brain-Boosters for Summer

Helping your children stay mentally active over the summer doesn’t have to be boring—it can be creative and fun. Encourage your children to keep exploring and playing, so they’ll head back to school feeling confident and ready to learn. And don’t forget to register soon for our Before & After School programs. Spots are filling and we want to make sure everyone is all set, so we can hit the ground running this fall.

1. Read Something Every Day

Encourage your children to grab a book or comic and read for just 15 to 20 minutes a day. Whether it’s a short story or a cool fact book, reading helps build vocabulary and keep imaginations strong.

2. Play Brain-Boosting Games
Puzzles, memory games and word searches are all great providing a challenge. Even board games like Scrabble or Uno help with thinking and strategy skills.

3. Keep a Summer Journal
Have your children write about their day, a trip they took, or they can even make up their own stories. Journaling helps children organize their thoughts and develop their writing skills. Plus, it will make a great memento.
4. Make a DIY Science Experiment
Set up science experiments at home with supplies you have on hand. For example, you can make a volcano with baking soda and vinegar, explore static electricity with a balloon, or play a ‘sink or float’ challenge with different objects.

5. Set up a “Question of the Day” Jar
Fill a jar with interesting questions such as “Why is the sky blue?” or “How do airplanes fly?” Pick one each day and research the answer together—it’s a great way to stay curious and learn new things.

6. Unleash Your Child’s Inner Engineer
Have them build with blocks, LEGOS or magnets. Designing structures helps with problem-solving and spatial thinking. Challenge your children to build something different every week—a bridge, a house, or whatever interesting item they can dream up.

7. Have a Family Quiz Night
Put together trivia questions about animals, space, history, or favorite movies. Taking turns as the “quiz master” is great for developing presentation skills.

8. Cook or Bake Together
Following recipes helps with reading comprehension and math (think measuring, fractions, and timing). Plus, the whole family can enjoy the results.

9. Make a Comic Strip
Have your children create their own characters and write a short comic strip about their adventures. It’s a fun way to practice writing, creativity, and sequencing.

10. Create a Puzzle for Someone Else
Make a crossword, word search, or maze for a sibling or parent. Designing puzzles helps develop logic, spelling, and attention to detail.

11. Invent a New Language
Create a new alphabet, symbol set, or made-up words. Then try writing messages or notes with it. This is a great way to foster creativity and literacy.

12. Make a Weather Chart
Track the weather for a week, noting temperature, cloud types, precipitation, etc. Try predicting tomorrow’s forecast based on patterns. Research some basic weather facts and have fun with it.

13. Do Shadow Drawing Outdoors
In the morning or evening, place toys on paper outside and trace their shadows. Observe how shadows change over time—this is great way to hone observations skills.

14. Make an “Invention Box”
Gather cardboard, string, buttons, bottle caps, etc., and challenge your children to invent something useful or wacky. Let them create a fun or whimsical name for their creation.
15. Create a “Top 5” List
Each Day Ask your children to choose their top 5 in a daily category such as top 5 animals, foods, books, or superheroes. Then ask your children to explain their selections in writing or a video. Ranking and reasoning build critical thinking.
